In March 2018 the new Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa comes into effect. The TSS visa replaces the old subclass 457. Underpinning the new TSS visa is a new training levy which will need to be satisfied by employers looking to employ skilled foreign workers.
Although the detailed Migration Regulations which will apply from March 2018 are not yet available, some clarity has been given by DIBP to the grandfathering of those people who held a 457 or who had applied for a 457 as of 18 April 2017.
Recent changes to the migration regulations have made it more challenging and in many cases unlikely that one will ultimately be able to obtain permanent residence. There may still, however, be the options for temporary visas.
